AUGURI:

indomitabile.

Pace e Bene

Sretan Bozic i nova godina!

ciao, Fabio

While my children and I were enjoying a delicious plate of gnocchi that my dear Nona still enjoys to cook up, I was telling Noni of your website. My Nono, Giuseppe (Bepi) Giugovaz is from Filaria, my Nona (Aurelia) from Sterna. Nono was hoping to find out any information about some friends who left for Argentina. It would be great if anyone has any information about Agostino(born in 1910); Isidoro (born in 1908); and Severino(born 1928) Giugovaz. Nono recalls that they moved to Plata, Argentina, some 60km from Buenos Aries.

I enjoyed coming across this website. As another visitor had noted, It is comforting to know that others have had some difficulties answering the questions posed about the origins of our names and our culture.

Thank you for any information that I may be able to pass on.

George M Peakovic asked:
"I had one other question. Does anyone know the origination of the "ovic" that ends so many differant surnames? I have seen this in russia, germany, croatia, serbia and slovenian names. If my hunch is right it could be that it relates to one specific tribe of people. I would appreciate any thoughts or comments."

George, that means "son of", similar to the Spanish, French, Italian "de", German "von", Scottish "mac", Irish "O ' ", etc etc. But unlike some of the languages quoted above, it has no nobility connotation.

I left Pola with my family in 1957 and came to Australia. My father Guiseppe, who was born in Visignano in 1916, has since passed away but my mother Cesira (nee Fedel), born in Parenzo in 1920, is still living. We love hearing about Istria and reading the input from other Istrians on your website. Thank you for allowing "us" to get together like this!

We are interested in genealogy and the history of Istria. If anybody has information on our family names we would love to share what we have. Other names that occur in our family history are Cottiga, Racovac, Rupenovic, Bencich, Smuz and Matijasic. Australia seems such a long way away, but hearing others talk about Istria brings it that little bit closer! Many thanks. If anyone would like to e-mail me, my address is ferrucciovesnaver@yahoo.com.au

For Marisa only:

Istrian Thanks at the End of the Day.
(by a famous poet from Zara - Silvio Alesani "Me Par Ieri")

Fragment (Frammento) from "A Barcola"

Cosi` ti ga finido un altro giorno
Dando a tuti quel che de meo ti ga,
Tuti te lassa ormai, tuto intorno
Xe? silenzio, abandono.
Tuti i te lassa, senza dirte un grazie!

Fragment from "A Barcola"

Thus you ended another day
Giving to all what is your best
All have left you by now, all around
It?s forlorn silence. And you well know:
(There goes the world, with its mishaps?)
All leave you, without saying a single Thanks!

THANKS Domina MARISA!

Your site is delightfull!
I am very glad to find information about Istro-Romanians and to find that they are not extincted.

They speak a dialect of Romanian language, (the Romanian language spoken in Romania is the Daco-Romanian dialect) and they are part of the so called Balcanic Latinity, togather with the A-Romanians and Megleno-Romanians spreded in former Iugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece and diaspora.

I am interested to find more about the present life of Istro-Romanians.
Plese contact me on my e-mail address.
Thank you.

Cari amici istriani del mondo !
We imigrated to Canada in 1957 from Trieste on the Saturnia. My father REMIGIO KRAMERSTETTER (1936)of Castelvenere and my mother FIORELLA BONAZZA (1934)of Villa Cucciani are looking to renew contacts with lost friends across the world who left during the mass exodus of after World War II. I am also collecting today & past genealogical informations on the Kramerstetter & Bonazza families history.

hello fellow istrians!!!
i returned from istria (croatia) on october 23rd 2002 and had a wonderful trip there for two weeks! i went with my cousin mary ann tirapelle whose mother was born in mali losinj(1920) as was my dad (1915), her brother. we spent 5 nights in mali losinj at the aurora hotel...we rented bikes one day and rode all over this gorgeous serene island visiting the church and friends of my grandmother and the home where my dad was born in san martin which is now a bed and breakfast 10 feet from the sea.(61 san martin)..we also had dinner with cousins beti (stuparich) and vjekoslav galjanic. vijekoslav (luigi) used to be in charge of all the hotels in lussin (his picture is in the Cres Losinj foto book with Tito and kids in the beginning of the book, he is on the far right)... bettys mother was a lechich and i found them in 1987 and have been writing ever since. their daughters vilenka and ajsa were there too. vilenka is an oil color artist and speaks fluent english. wonderful people (vilenka cooked our dinner all day while we visited veli losinj)...from losinj we went to Hvar the sunniest island which mario maharich told me about...lavendar is grown there and they sell lavendar oil and sachets on the street...there we stayed at the Palace Hotel with a wonderful view of the sea and there is a 15th c. loggia there also.we took a boat ride to outer islands and swam in the adriatic...
from Hvar to dubrovnik for 3 nites. we had lots of sun with some short spells of rain thrown in. do not stay at the Kompas Hotel in dubrovnik...we got the whole story from a travel agent who met us there and she took us to another hotel right away...thank god for barbara...anyway we loved the whole trip..great package deal thro travel time in astoria, new york (dragica lukas) 1-800-354-8728...call her and book a trip...great prices!!!
i will be moving this weekend so wont have my computer for awhile...love to all my istrian friends!

I am looking for any help I can get in researching my fathers history. He was Croation, born in Stara Gradiska jugoslavia June 20, 1892.His father was Mato Peakovic. His grandfather name I do not have, but, his great grandfathers name was Marko. I am told that they all came from Stara Gradiska.

My problems are twofold:

1) i have heard stories that the name Peakovic began with one of the sons of the Pejacevic family during the early Austro-Hungarian empire. the story goes that this particular some commited a crime of some sort and was arrested and jailed in Stara Gradiska. His family,a powerful noble one during those days, disowned him when he got out of jail. He changed his name to Peakovic. Was he the first Peakovic or did the name already exist?

2)Another story goes that all of the Croats are descendents of the Elamites way way back in the early days of white russia. For some reason food, war whatever they left their homeland and migrated to other parts of Europe.Does anyone have any information on the truth of this story.
I realize I am not Istrian, but, I am hopeful you will print this.In closing let me say that that whole area is one of the beaytiful parts of our world.

sincerely

Finally i have found my people, a home...thank you Marisa for this fabulous website. At last people who understand what it is like to have a slavic last name, Italian culture, but a father born in 1915 in Mali Losinj when it was Austria, although he spoke Italian... and later when my aunt was born it was Italy... and later Yugoslavia and now Croatia...try explaining that to someone who just wants to know what nationality you are...geeeeez!!! so no more explaining! I have been to Mali Losinj twice and plan to return October 9th 2002 for a week and then on to Dubrovnik via the ferry. I cant wait it is so gorgeous! Is anyone else going there in October? it would be fun to meet up with you! And being from a hick town in Ca. where there is nothing cultural, I always wanted to go to an Istrian party in New York or anywhere. Sign me up. When is the next hodown?

My Grandparents were also born in Mali Losinj: Antonia Zuvanich Lechich (1890) and Romolo Carlo Lechich (1882), a shipbuilder who ended up in Stockton Ca. in 1922 working for Stephens Bros. Boat Works. (My grandfather's mother's maiden name was Martinolich) (My grandmothers mothers maiden name was Poglianich)

Hi All Istrians Worldwide

I was so shocked and excited to find this site of Istrians worldwide uniting. I am an Istrian by decent. Born in Australia to Eugen and Nella Legovich (Cehic)both from villages near Porec, Istria. I am Australian but strongly value my cultural heritage. I have been to Istria and I am about to return there again next month to introduce my husband to my parent's homeland for the first time. If anyone has any special travel tips they would like to offer me about Istria or the Dalmatian coast please forward them to my email address.

Best wishes to all Istrians!
Lynette

Hello,

I am excstatic to come upon "Istria On The Internet" I have spend hours so far looking
through the site. Amazingly are all the people around the world who's families
or themselves have originated from Istra. I have also.

I was born in Rijeka and have family in Slovenia, Matule, Rijeka, Gorica and my favorite
ZEJANE. If anyone is from the area please email me. I am of TURKOVICH
decent from my father (Nando) and I beleive it's Stambolich on my mothers (Marija) side.

I look forward to future visitor feedback entries.

Hello,
I really like your site, it is very informative, from the pictures it looks like a very beautiful place to be. I have been doing surname research, and am trying to trace my paternal grandfather and grandmother. I know my grandfather Marco Ivancich, was born in Trieste. I remember, my grandfather was fluent in many languages. This would make sense, from what I have discovered on your site, there are many diverse cultures in a small geographic area. My father said he had a lot of brothers /and sisters. I looked up Ivancich in Trieste directory, and there are 38. He emigrated to the USA, and settled in Hoboken, New Jeresy, with my grandmother, Florence Andrich -- who I believe was born in Yugoslavia. Would love to hear from anyone who could add more information to our family history. I can be reached at suewho956@aol.com. Thank you. Will check back often.

Hello, Dear Friends:

I just want you to know that "Istria On The Internet" is one of the most popular links on our Website which is made up of American & British Soldiers who served in Trieste from 1945 until 1954. Many of our members are married to Triestine girls and return there often. It would brighten our hearts if you all would visit our website and sign the register. It can't compare with Istria On The Internet, but I think you will find it interesting and full of love for Trieste & Istria. May God Bless You All. Tomaso

Buon lavoro

I just came upon this website and I think it is wonderful! My parents came to this country in the 1960's. My mother is from Cepic and my father is from Zatka. I have had the opportunity to go there a few times to visit my relatives and I must say that I haven't seen a more beautiful country! It was such a treat to be where my parents grew up! We had such a wonderful time there...I hope to go back soon as I really miss my family and the beauty of their homeland.

Hoping you all are having a wonderful New Year!!!

Hello,

We saw your website, istrianet.org.

My Grandmother was Helen Tudor 1912 to 1989 born in Grande Mune, Istria. She was the Youngest Daughter of Martin Tudor 1871 to 1952 and Maria Pellozza 1877 to 1945.

I know that Martin was the 3rd Martin Tudor. His Father and Grandfather were also Martin Tudor from Grande Mune, Istria.

Helen had many Siblings Maria, Anton, Joseph, Simon, Appalonia and Johann Tudor all born in Grande Mune, Istria.

So, if possible, does anyone you have any information on the names or people named

Thank you for allowing me to visit your wonderful web site. I have just spent several hours reading each and every comment that has been entered. I think your site is unique. I say that because it is almost like a living, breathing thing. You can actually sense the warmth and open friendliness that is so characteristic of Istrian people. As I browsed through the pages, occasionally I would pause, for there would be a person I once knew many, many lifetimes before. Often times God, fate and destiny tear us apart from people that were so very special. People whom we shall never, ever forget. To learn that such a person has found complete happiness and is alive and well is a blessing.

I shall return to your site often and in the meantime, may God bless you and keep you. Tomaso.

my wife's grandfather, ivan krbavac, came to the usa from istria before wwi. he was a coalminer who worked in southern illinois as well as other states. we know that he mined in the wind river range of wyoming during wwi. he was a union organizer and was eventually blackballed from further mining work because of his union activities. he moved to chicago, illinois after wwi and did odd jobs there until dying in 1972.

we know that he visited relatives in argentina. we know that he had relatives that remained behind istria.

if any of this sounds familiar to anyone, i would appreciate a response. i do know that he spoke slovenian as a primary language and not croatian. he also spoke some italian. i know that from correspondence that remains from the settlement of a will.

any help would be appreciated.

Dear Daniela,

Thank you for your generous thought, but this project would not have come to much without the help of a few honest, fair-minded, and hard working persons who know that Istria's people are all part of a multi-colored rainbow that has been dispersed around the world. Through the magic of the internet we are now slowly but surely reconnecting the broken links of our family chain.

I would like to point out to all of our friends that you provided us with an incredible collection of photographs that you personally took of the World Trade Center tragedy from your vantage point only steps away from the scene. These can be seen as part of our tribute to the World Trade Center which has a special link on our "What's New" page.

In behalf of the working team of https://www.istrianet.org, I thank you for sharing your wonderful photographs with us - and thereby with Istrians everywhere.
