Jes je bilo joko dobro. Smo imeli jenu velu bisteku, trukinju, salatu, pazula, i ake sake fozi dolci i kafe. Neki je donesa vina , biru i anke rakiju, pa smo to jali i pili do sita. I just recently discovered that my Grandfather (Giovanni Poropat) emigrated from the village of Dane, Istria. I am searching for other relatives in this region. All I know is that my Great Grandfather's name was Tomaso, Grand Aunt (Grandfather's Sister) was Helena. When Helena passed away i was told that my uncle Martino Poropat went back to Dane and married my Grandfather's other sister.

I hope to here from any relatives from the region so that I can fill in some Genealogy blanks.

What a wonderful website !! I'm so pleased I came accross it in my search for information on my family's birthplace and I am very impressed with the quality of the site and the information within. Our last name is Radovich, Grandmother Alma and her husband came from Cepic after WWI Alma was born in 1900 and past away in Brooklyn a few months shy of her 100th birthday. I just discovered this website (7-12-03) and am most impressed. It is absolutely extraordinary!

My father, Anthony Dominic Nacinovich, 1900-1964, was born in Fianona, Istria and was a member of the St. George of Fianona Society for years in Astoria, NY. His entire family lived in Istria. He had several brothers and two sisters. I had occasion to visit the house in which he was born and to meet aunts, uncles and cousins for the first time during the summer of 1969. I, my three brothers and a sister were all born in New York City; and, my Slovak mother, Mary (Shervanick), 1910-2002, was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania.

I was aware of relatives living in Paris, Italy and parts of Canada years ago. I'm sure there are many relatives still living in what-is-now Croatia. Currently, I actually know of no relatives on my father's side. Please write if you are a cousin. Thank you/Hvala vam.

Dvadeset is prva Hrvatska Extravaganca u Sacramentu bila je jako uspjesna. Preko 500 ljudi, cijele porodice, dosle su na tu proslavu. Dijeca i odrasli obuceni u naridnim nosnjama plesali su Balkanske plesove is Hrvatske, Bosne, i Banata. Maja Blagdan i Marsel Benson pjevali su popularne hrvatske pijesme. Hrana je bila izvanredna ali najbolji su bili razni slatkisi kojih nisam mogao da prestanem jesti. Na proslavu su dosli I moji Istriani kojih sam zadnji puta vidio pred tri sedmice u Italian- American Club za “Cacciatore” veceru i ples. Biti Istranin znaci osijecati se kod kuce sa talijanima i hrvatima. 

Twenty-first Croatian Extravaganza in Sacramento was very successful. More than 500 people, complete families, came to this celebration. Kids and grownups in ethnic Croatian outfits danced various Balkan dances from Croatia, Bosnia, and Banat. Maja Blagdan and Marsel Benson were singing popular Croatian songs. Food was great but my favorites were various home made cookies, which I could not stop eating. At this celebration I also found my Istrian friends that I last saw at the Italian-American Club three week ago for their “Cacciatore” dinner-dance. One of the benefits of being an Istrian is feeling “at home” with Italians and Croatians.

L'Istria e' la patria d'origine. Il Padre di mio Nonno parti', a Trieste a fare il Direttore d'orchestra al Teatro Verdi. Mio Nonno era Titino e dopo la guerra riprese il cognome originario cambiato dal fascismo. Mio Padre invece ando' a Roma perche' era un ministeriale come lo sono anch'io da vent'anni. Ho sempre avuto il cuore in Yugo e ho avuto molto dispiacere quando e' scoppiata la guerra fratricida. Ultimamente ho conosciuto la pittrice istriana Adalgisa Narcisa Skopac e speravo in qualcosa di piu' ma non e' stato cosi' comunque le ho dedicato qualche poesia di cui allego il link.

On May 10th there was a dinner/dance (Venetian Night) in the Peninsula Club Hall in San Mateo (South of SFO) organized by the Italian- American Club. I was lucky to be able to get tickets through some good friends of mine, Claudio and Nadia Faraguna, from San Carlos, since I am not a club member. The evening was lovely with good company, food, wine and music. There were only twelve of us Istrians among some 350 people at the party. I expected more and I commented to my friends about the lack of Istrian participation. In the past, they said, we had much more people coming to these functions, but unfortunately old people leave us and the young generation may not be interested in listening to “danceable music” and sitting around with older people. “O temporae o mores”- loosely translated from Latin “time changes habits” and new generations are pursuing different interests whether they are Istrians or not. I don’t mean to end this thought on a sad note. We had a great time and are planning to participate in their “Cacciatore Night” dinner/dance on May 31st where we will probably be eating polenta.

I am so glad to see that we (2nd generation Istriani) can go and find out what's happening in Istra and it's very exciting to see that people all over the globe are visitng this site. My family comes from areas close to Labin, being so far away (Australia) it's nice to be able to log on and catch up with what's happening. Can't wait to see her next year. Keep up the good work.

This has been great seeing and learning about ISTRA which is my father- and mother-in-law homecountry. We all live in Sweden and I have a problem now, which I hope this site can help me with. My mother-in-law will be 60 years in august and I want to make her something speciell from ISTRA. Is there anyone who can mail me some recepies for cookies, cake, dessert, food. She talks about ISTRA so much and are longing to get back.

Just discovered this site a couple of days ago. Since then, I have been spending a lot of time surfing through the entries for each calendar year. It is fascinating to see how scattered we Istrians are all over the globe. When people ask me what county I am from, I have to pause and find a geographic map and point. Then I have to explain that the house I was born in belonged to four countries in four generations. My grandfather was in Austria, my father was in Italy, I was born in Italy and lived in Yugoslavia, and now the house is in Croatia. This concept is very strange to Americans and probably to most people in the world. 

Did you noticed that when Istrians have a party, there are at least three languages spoken simultaneously? Sometimes two people speak to each other in two different languages without even noticing it. The cross-pollination of all these different cultures made us Istrians a unique breed of people unlike any others in the world. We have a lot to be proud for. We are able to adapt to any environment and make a good life for ourselves. We are industrious and enterprising and always rely on our abilities and hard work and never look for handouts. I know a lot of Istrians here in the San Francisco-Bay Area and they are all doing well. When I go to Astoria to visit my family, I notice the same Istrian spirit.

This site is becoming a bond between all of us Istrians and should promote closer relationship of Istrians in different part of the world as soon as they discover this site and start communicating.

Great Site

Real eye opener from a cultural perspective. Looking for any Deklics around the world. My father Guido Deklic came to Canada in the late 50's. He was born in Deklici. I have noticed in several web searches that there are Deklics located in Calgary Canada, In Australia and even in New York City and of course still in Istria and Trieste. My father was born in Pola 17 April 1934. Our family name is Colbasso - and I would love to get in contact with any relatives. My grandparents were Maria Privileggio born Rovigno 1910 and Carlo Colbasso born Pola 1909. The family settled in Australia in 1951 after travelling around and staying in refugee camps. My father and grandparents our now dead. I woould love to make contact and to learn about my family. Most of all i miss hearing them speak in dialetto!

Sono figlia di un'esule istriana che mi ha fatto amare la sua terra d'origine quanto quella nella quale vivo da sempre. Vado ogni anno in Istria e...mi sento a casa, sento un legame cosi' profondo che capisco che sono li' le mie radici. So che la mia famiglia si e' dispersa un po' ovunque, e ci siamo persi, ma vorrei tanto ritrovare qualcuno, ricostruire la memoria, quindi vi prego di contattarmi se sapete qualcosa della famiglia MARTINOLICH di FIUME.

my great grandparents originaly came from trieste to america around 1905-10. they listed themselves as austrian on some documents, i can not find their name or similar anywhere, i have done many searches, some people say the surname is croation, some say it is austrian/slavik.
My great grandafater spelled his name Veselitza
he had a brother who spelled it weselisa
my great grandmothers maiden name was Moloutz.
Are their any Veselitza's in triest today??

Hi there all and a happy 2003 to everyone. I came accross this site while searching for passenger lists on the Ocean Liner Aurelia, we landed in Fremantle from Trieste in 1958. My father was born in Raspor Ivan Bozic and my mother was born in Rijeka Petra Perozic. I was in Rijeka in October 2002 for the first time in 46 years and checked out all my roots, where I was born etc I travelled with my Daughter Cassie who is an Australian we went to Portugal, Spain then caught a small jet to Verona Italy where we caught a train to Trieste and then travelled by bus to Rijeka. It was all a bit eerry for me as this is where it all started for me I was born in Rijeka in 1951 then at the age 6 we escaped from Communist Yugoslavia and were in a refugee camp in Trieste before departing to Perth West Australia. I had a great time with my Auntie and cousins in Rijeka I also went to the Island of Krk where my mother was born and also To Raspor where I still have an Auntie, called in to Rovign on the way back. I was impressed with country side and the adriatic coast couldnt get over the history everywhere. But allas I am an Australian now and I can't really remember anything prior to my sixth birthday so it did not have any real inpact. I was glad that my daughter met her Auntie and cousins and I feel a lot better that the family tie has been made by my child back to Croatia I can now rest easy knowing that there will be a further links for the next generation.
