Yanks, Brits & their Triestine wives who were in Trieste 1945 - 1954 don't want to miss this one! We have just reviewed Mario Comuzzi's newly released CD & book, "La Triestinita." Bellissima! Photos from that era (including some from The Old Soldiers' Home) are included in his work. Don't miss it! Now for you and this fantastic web site. Each year at Christmas time, I visit it time and time again, for there is no other place on the internet that so embodies the true spirit of Christmas. Each year I think it just can't get any better and each year you prove me wrong. This year it is simply dazzling! May God continue to bless you and your wonderful work!

I came by way of a Link in the 'The Old Soldiers Home'. I served with the 'TRUST TROOPERS' in Trieste, Sept. '47-50'. I was formally stationed in Gorizia, where I met my wife, Silvana Grioni. My son Charles, was born in Trieste in 1949. I have been back to Trieste 2 times and love the sites and people. I will return to this site and remember the good times when I come back to visit.

Ekaterina, it is more likely that your last name is related to Romanian Istria than to Konzul, who was nicknamed "Istranin." This was not his last name. One of the most known Romanian figures who used the word "Istria" to describe herself and her origin is Dora d'Istria. There are a number of web links that offer information on her. Best, M Morosini

Wonderful website about a wonderful corner of the world. This is such a rich and beautiful area -- rich in culture, and character, and the beauty speaks for itself. I was there last in 1999. My parents are there now, visiting relatives in the Porec area. Dad is from Nova Vas. Mom is from Rijeka. Some of my family tree hails such names as Kuharic, and Legovic. There is also Italian influence in Basilico. The Kuharics settled in Ohio. I'd be interested in knowing how many of us are in the Greater Toronto Area. Cheers. I often visit this site for the sheer pleasure of connecting with the Istria of my birth. Although I was but a child when my family left our "Klia home", the memories of the countryside remain vivid. What a feeling of triumph to find and pick wild asparagus, mushrooms, artichokes... with my sister. Rivalry was part of the fun. But, oh the wild, blue violets with their intense perfume were my favourite. Just a small bunch would perfume the whole room. Wild violets are still my favourite flower and although there's a profusion of wonderful wild purple/blue violets sprouting each spring in my back yard, alas, they lack the perfume. Many thanks. I do appreciate the Istria site. By the way do you have pictures of the small church in Klia called "San Nicolo"? That evokes more memories and yes it would provide another sentimental journey.
Maria Grace <maria.grace@sympatico.ca>
Dear "nije vazno", There is nothing to correct. The original date of the article is clearly indicated and, of course, it was written while Yugoslavia was still the country that ruled over Istria. This neither invalidates the article nor demeans anyone as you suggest. Thank you otherwise for your recognition of our hard work, and please do not hesitate to offer additional constructive comments. Better still, join our "istria-talks" mailing list which includes several key members of the United Čepić Club, including several shown in the 1990 photograph. :-) Marisa

Both of my parents come fron Cepec. My mother was born 7/12/25 when the are was still Italy. Her name was Anna Lubicich. My father, Matteo (Michael) Zulich, born 3/07/13, when it was Austria. I am trying to find out more info about both sides of my family. Unfortunately, they have both passed away, so I can longer ask them. Any info would be helpful. Who knows, we might be related. salve a tutti, sono una ragazza di 21 anni figlia da parte di madre di istriani e mi sento in dovere di fare alcune considerazioni. sicuramente le foibe sono state un orrore ed una vergogna non destinate mi auguro piu'a ripetersi, su questo non c'e' dubbio, ma mi perche' non si parla mai o se lo si fa in maniera molto leggera di tutto quanto compiuto dai fascisti nei confronti della popolazione slava durante gli anni della loro dominazione? la storia non e' unilaterale, se dobbiamo considerare i fatti, facciamolo nella loro interezza. le famosi leggi del 1927 attraverso le quali si italianizzavano forzatamente i cognomi slavi, la chiusura di scuole croate e slovene, il bando della lingua croata e slovena dagli atti pubblici ma anche dalla vita quotidiana, che e' tutto questo? ci sono fatti concreti a riguardo, ma nessuno sembra tenerne conto. personalmente trovo tutto questo orribile e trovo indegno arrivare alla italianizzazione forzata di una popolazione, togliendole cosi non solo il proprio passato, ma anche le proprie origini, la propria storia, il proprio vissuto. mia madre oggi si trova non portare il proprio cognome, quello che le sarebbe spettato per diritto e che portavano in origine i suoi nonni, bisnonni, etc ma un cognome italianizzato del quale non e' possibile trovare nessun riscontro dato che non esiste una "storia" di quel cognome. le mie affermazioni non hanno nessuna valenza politica, questo e' solo lo sfogo di una ragazza ventenne che vorrebbe oggi sapere qualcosa in piu' sul suo passato e che sente che questo, le e' stato negato.

Greetings, I just found your site and it is beautiful and informative. I have been looking for my father in laws family for "years". His name is Joseph Visintini born Trieste Feb 1900. His father had two wives, and I believe Joseph had a sister who died young and a brother who was a pilot and died in the war. Any info would be greatly appreciated. His father and mothers names are: Giovanni and Maria Kocijancic Visintini (and that spelling could have changed??). Thanking you. Dawn
