Thank you for the wonderful website.

My father’s family is from Pola. I visited Pola in 2013, and was fortunate to locate members of my grandmother’s family (Franco/Francovich). This enabled me to get a better understanding of my grandmother’s family, but I am still looking for information about my grandfather (Pietro Petranich) and his family. Pietro Petranich was born in Pola and died in 1945, aged 59 years. He married Maria Francovich and had two sons Livio (my father) and Lodovico (my uncle). Livio and Lodovico Petranich were the only members of the Petranich family to migrate to Australia – after the Second World War.

I understand that Pietro Petranich did not have any brothers and sisters, but had cousins. I think that one of his cousins migrated to Canada and another migrated to Argentina.

I would love to hear from anyone who might have information about Pietro Petranich and his family. My email address is

My grandfather was from Podtsrana, Croatia. Cousins there said that the church records said that the first Cicerich in Podstrana came from the Ciceria area in Istria in the 1600s. There are other names in the town that might be of Istro-Romanian origin (and I might be related to them) - Dumicic, Glavinavich, Vlasich. I had a DNA test done through 23andMe, and I came up as being part Romanian, with distant cousins in Transylvania.

I found this information on Wikipedia as you can see and found it very informative for people from Istria who declared themselves Italian and Italian speaking.

My Grandfather Rudolf Pataj, born in Bogliuno, November 1891 and his brother Benjamin Pataj born Fiume, August 1893 came to America. They had a sister Amelia or Emelia who stayed in what is now Reijeka. She may of had been injured or burned while very young by a petro lamp but survived. When Rudolf and Benj came to the United States there name became PATTAY. I am a descendent of Rudolf (rudolph Pataj) son, Joseph L. Pattay.I would love to hear from family or history of family.

Dear Marisa Ciceran,

Thank you for this wonderful website that you have created. It is filled with a wealth of information. You have dedicated a great amount of time and energy to make it available for the public and I commend you for this.

Silvia & Mario Bercari are my Godparents. They resided on 14th Street between 8th Avenue & Prospect Park West in Park Slope. They are the couple sitting together in this photo, on the right side of table number 11 for the wedding reception of Dina Salamon & Gino Yurman.

Silvia's maiden name was either Sgagliadic or Zgagliardich, I'm not sure of the spelling. Silvia & Mario had a daughter named Lilly. I probably have not seen them since the early 1970's. Do you have any information on this family? You can email me at

Joe Capolarello Sunday, 26 January 2014 18:37
I believe the correct spelling of Silvia Bercari's maiden name was Sgagliardich.

Dear Marisa Ciceran,
What a pleasure to finally meet you today after speaking and corresponding with you for so long. You are a very special person and I appreciate your friendship.
Thank you again for everything you have done for the Istrian people on this wonderful site you developed.

Marisa Saturday, 9 November 2013 22:31
The pleasure was all mine to finally meet you in person. We had a lovely lunch and you steered me in an upward direction - starting with the Highline Park which I photographed at every crossroad and beyond. Thank you for these treats!

I am a Brasilian descendent of Maria Lencović (or Lenzovich), born in 19th century in Sušnjevica, daughter of Romeo Lencović and Anna Fajman. Does anyone know how I can get information about these istrian ancestors in church records?

Bruno Fucci Friday, 1 November 2013 15:46
Pedro, no records of Sušnjevica (italian Valdarsa)are available on FamilySearch. Maybe the place is not a parrish since it seems that is under Kršan commune. Records of Kršan from 1713 to 1904 (Births and Marriages) are available on line.

Anton Friday, 8 November 2013 22:58
Parish records of Sušnjevica were destroyed by the Germans during WWII, in 1944.

I was saddened not to be able to find the short "biography" I wrote about my maternal grandmother, Erminia Kaucic, for this website. I was in hospital for a while, but maybe you thought I had lost interest. I did not lose interest, just the article! Maybe it is still here and I cannot locate it? Thank you.

It is good to hear from you. We have all had our share of family illnesses and tragedies (my worst came in the last six months). I wish you well.

Your wonderful essay is still on our site where it has always been. On the MAIN MENU, click on CULTURE AND SOCIETY. On the next menu that opens, go to PEOPLE, then MEMORIES. You will find it listed under your name as the contributor.

My beloved aunt and Godmother, Nina Ciceran (from 13 St Brooklyn), passed away last night at 11 pm.
She was at home on the upper West Side with her daughter Marisa when she passed peacefully in her sleep.
She was the last of my daddy's brothers and sisters, a proud and large family of 9, from Novo Vas, Istria, and who lived in Genoa, Italy with the family before coming to America.

She will be missed with all my heart and we remember her with love always.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Friday Wake: G Duffy Funeral Home - 255 9th St, Brooklyn, NY 718-499-8700
Funeral: Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday morning

More details to follow.

"Requiem Aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetuae luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen."

Thank you for this announcement and wonderful tribute to my dear mother who touched the lives of and was loved by many people. For the benefit of those who come to our Guestbook to find lost relatives and friends, let me add some information about her since she had relatives and friends all around the world.

Her full maiden name was Giovanna Iurman "lu Zuretiza", with grandparents also named Sabirsek and greatparents from the Cvecich and Belich clans. She was born in the Istro-Romanian village of Noselo, which was called Villanova d'Arsa under Italy (1920-1947) and became Nova Vas under Yugoslavia (1947). Her village was part of the town of Susnjevica (Rom./It. Susnieviza and later Valdarsa).

In the late 1920s or early 1930s, the family surname was changed to Giormani, and after WWII changed again by Yugoslavia to the Slavic spelling of the original name as Jurman. There are people around the world who retained the Iurman and Giormani variations of the surname, as well as those who changed it to an Anglicized version as Yurman, a name that has entirely different historical roots. (Added note: the letter Y does not exist in Romanian, Italian or Croatian; the letter J does not exist in Romanian or Italian.)

Lastly, our home ties are in Istria, Rijeka-Fiume, Italy and the USA, with remote family ties also in Canada and Australia. We also have a few friends left in Busalla and Savignone, suburbs of Genova, Italy where we lived 1947-51. From 1951-95, our family lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn where we are remembered at three different addresses. In 1995, mom left Brooklyn to come to live with me in my apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. This has been her home for the past 17-1/2 years and where she peacefully died.

(218) Dear Istrian Organization

I am looking for a contact, as a 25% of my being pertains to the Istrian land. My grandmother indeed was fom Lanischie, she was named Eufemia Klobas and was born in 1907. She went in Italy to survive and to find a job at the age of 16 years old. The memories of her youth are very tiny. I do not know if your web site would be helpful to gain some information, still I'm trying !!! Many thanks in advance, Paola Bottoni

Gesù bambino el nassi con tanta povertà.

Né fisse né fasse né fogo per scaldarse.
perché xe nato al mondo el nostro Redentor.

Canta, canta rose e fior che xe nato nostro Signor.

El xe nato a Betlemme tra un bue e un asinello.
Se ghe piaserà ai signori torneremo un altro anno.

Viva, viva el novo de l’anno.

This is a very informative website which has helped me learn more about my roots. My grandfather on my mother's side John Biaggio (blascovich) came from krsan (chersano) and settled in Montreal in 1928. I know that he was born giovanni blascovich and was born in 1904. Sadly he died before my birth.

Maybe I have some distant relatives here? I would love to connect with anyone with any information.

Again, thanks for this wonderful website!
