My father was born in Pula in 1922. Our family name is Benci but it was probably Bencich in the early 1920's.His name was Giulio Benci, son of Antonio Benci and Maria Cettina. I am wondering if anyone reading this may have information about my ancestors. Any information would be great no matter how unimportant it way seem. I know this goes back a long way but readers could even be related to me in some distant way. Thankyou

My mother Erna Sferco was born in Sissano 1919. Her family had to leave Sissano for Venice in 1946. Her mother was Maria Frezza and father Giovanni Sferco. Her grandparents [mother's side] I know are Pasqua Demarin and Francesco Frezza. I do have a cousin Nerina Frezza - still lives Sissano. I have been visiting the site on and off over the years, Marisa, thank you for all your work. My mom is Maria lu ?r?e from Kostrcan and my father was Mario lu Bodolo from Nova Vas. Have been speaking (or trying to) Vlashki all my life. Trying to keep the language alive speaking to my mom.

My grandparents immigrated to western Canada from Rovinj. Nonno Antonio Vicelli in 1919 and then his wife Antonia (Disanti) Vicelli and daughter Letitia Vicelli in 1924.

I went to Rovinj in 1980, but am excited to go again next year. We have relatives buried in Pula also.

Hello! Thank you for this resource. My paternal grandmother is from Pazin, born on Velanov Breg. She fled via Trieste to Australia at the start of WWII. Here she met and married my grandfather, from Maribor, Slovenia.

I have family still in Istria and have visited in 2001. One day I will bring my daughter to see this special, beautiful place.

With regard to your section on poetry relevant to Istria, you may wish to include a reference to the poem “Not Marble Nor the Gilded Monuments“, by the renowned American poet Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982). This poem includes the line, “The words sound but the face in the Istrian sun is forgotten.”

My father, 2 aunts and grandparents were born in Lussinpiccolo ...father born 1915, left in 1922 for America with his Mother and two little sisters to meet his dad Romolo Lechich in Stockton CA. where he worked as a boatbuilder for Stephens Boats....would love to hear from anyone who knows this name or the name Poglianich, (my great grandmothers maiden name.

I found it around 6months ago while doing some research into johann Weikhard Von Valvasor and some of his recordings in his book "The Glory of The Duchy of Carniola", which lead me to learning more about istria and quickly your website.

im currently in the middle of researching for an article im writing on the true history of vampire myths and stories, the background and diving into plausable answers as well as still suggesting the posibility of supernatural and the unknow. (youve got to keep an open mind!)

ive found your timeline particularly helpful and informative! i was, however, wandering how and where you managed to find some of the earliest information? based of your findings i did my own searches and struggled too fid some of the names and stories mentioned?

I am writing to announce a project that is open to all those who speak or understand Istro-Romanian (that is, Vlaški or Žejanski). The Project, called ISTROX, is based in the Linguistics Department at the University of Oxford. It draws on a body of audio recordings made by linguist Tony Hurren, during the 1960s, in several villages of the Istrian Peninsula. Fifty years after these recordings were made, we would like to work with the remaining speakers of the language to open up this material to the Istro-Romanian community and to specialist linguists.
