Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy

(Beata Vergine della Misericordia - Blažene Djevice Marije od Milosti)

The sole point of interest of the town of Madonna del Carso (Sveta Maria na Krasu) is the parish church. Dedicated to St. Mary of the Karst, it dates from the 16th century and was altered after World War II. With a single nave, it has a large altar with a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child and, above the entrance, a mezzanine for the choir. While the town once was feudal property separate from the comune of Umag, the church and curacy were subjects of Karšete (Carsette).

The church is flanked along its left side by a large building with a portico. In front of it are tall horse-chestnut trees that overshadow the sacristy.

The 20-meter tall bell tower is incorporated with the church. The base is of rusticated ashlars and the body of the tower is plastered. The steeple has a white stone edging and a pair of small windows on each side and two clock faces on the north and west sides. At the belfry there are large white mullioned windows with twin lights on each facade. It is crowned at the top by a tall brick cuspid with four pilasters sculpted at each corner of the superior crown, with a conical spire in the middle.
