Oprtalj / Portole Here the stone head is not a human head, but looks more like a bear or a dog? It has small pointed ears and big smile. It was built as a keystone into the arch that is barely visible above the door transom. My guess is that it is very old, gothic period maybe? It is on a house, now empty, next to one of the children's homes that Oprtalj has several of. These homes are housing orphaned or displaced kids from the Balkan wars of the 1990's. It looks like a friendly bear... The head below is in the town loggia.
