HOUND

From Croatia Weekly, June 10, 1999.

Istrian hound finally recognized as a Croatian breed

On May 30, the Croatian cynological heritage was once more affirmed and, more importantly, enhanced. The Istrian short-hair hound and the Istrian coarse-haired hound were finally recognized as autochthonous Croatian (hunting) breeds. This decision was made at the General Assembly of the FCI (the international cynological organization) held in Mexico, a meeting in which the Croatian Kennel Club also participated.

So far, five indigenous Croatian breeds of dog have been recognized: the Croatian shepherd, the Dalmatian dog, the Posavina hound and the Istrian hound (short-hair and coarse-haired). The process for having certain breeds recognized was arduous, despite historical, geographic and chronological arguments. Problems emerged with the recognition of the Istrian hound because the Slovenian Kennel Club submitted an almost identical, but completely unfounded, request that both the Istrian short-hair and coarse-haired hounds be recognized as Slovenian breeds.

POINTER

Istrian pointer internationally recognized as Croatian breed

ZAGREB, Jan 9, 2000 (Hina) - After nine years of efforts invested by Croatian experts, hunters, breeders and dog lovers, the Istrian pointer has at last been internationally recognised as an autochtonous Croatian breed. At last, because the Istrian pointer was mentioned for the first time in 1374 by Djakovo Bishop Petar, who wrote that the breed was most widespread in Croatia's coastal region.

The breed was presented in Croatia for the first time in 1948.

Since the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, the Croatian Kennel Society took over the care for the breed and much credit goes to the Club for the recognition of the Istrian pointer as an autochtonous Croatian breed over Slovenia and Italy.

The club "Istrian Pointer" was established in Umag in 1988.
