A Croat Wins U.S. Culinary Oscar

Lidia Bastianich, proclaimed the best cook in the United States, will be awarded the James Beard award, a. k. a. the culinary Oscar

Fifty-two year old Lidia Bastianich has been proclaimed the best cook in the United States. She will receive the James Beard, a.k.a. the culinary Oscar. Lidia Bastianich is the chef in her own Felidia restaurant in Manhattan, as well as the co-owner of other two restaurants in New York and one in Kansas City.

Her last name attests to the fact that Lidia Bastianich is of Croat origin, i.e. Istrian-born. As a child, she moved to the United States with her parents in 1958. She opened her first restaurant in 1971 and has been successful in the catering business ever since.

Felidia has been considered one of the best restaurants in New York for several years. It is jointly run by Lidia, her son Joseph Bastianich and another supreme cook Mario Batali.

Lidia Bastianich runs a weekly cooking show on PBS public television. She says that, for her, cooking is a challenge and adventure in which she continuously plays with tastes and various ingredients she remembers from her childhood and which she now grows in the garden of her house in Queens. The trademark of her cuisine is octopus salad, stuffed pasta and a dish resembling one prepared with special Istrian pasta. (Hina)
