Internment and Deportation This section of our virtual home includes articles from newspapers and periodicals, chapters from books and other written materials provided from various documented sources that deal solely with the issues of deportations and camps of interment as they relate to Istria and its environs. While we make every effort to provide balanced and reliable data, there are instances where contrasting points of view will be presented. The information, views, and opinions expressed or implied on these pages, therefore, are solely those of the individual authors, their publishers and stated references. The management of IstriaNet.org does not endorse the content, accuracy, or reliability of the materials that are provided. Introduction:
The Lager in Italy and Yugoslavia: By a decree of September 4, 1940, camps of internment and deportation were initiated under Fascist Italy. Beginning with a count of 40 initial camps, the number rose, according to one historian, to 259. One author has cataloged 113 such camps in Italy and 22 in territories occupied by Italy (Yugoslavia and Albania).
