 rago Gervais (Žerve)
was born in Abbazia (now Opatija) on April 18, 1904, a descendant of a
French soldier who arrived during Napoleon's occupation, His father,
Artur, was born in Severin na Kupi in the Gorski kotar region and was a
music teacher. His mother Klementina was a native from Opatija. He had a
sister named Blanka. |

| In 1918 because of Italian annexation of
Istria he moved with his family to Bakar. In 1922 he graduated from the
Sušak school (lycee) and went to study at the Law School in Zagreb. During
his study he started to collaborate (or write?) for the Trieste magazin
Naš Glas where he published his first two poems Iz Improvizacija
and Mi. After his second year of studies he transferred to the Ljubljana Law School, but finished his senior year in Zagreb.
Soon after his diploma he moved to Crikvenica where he found a job in
a local law firm. The following year, he published his first collection of
poems,
Čakavski stihovi. He later worked in Bjelovar and Belgrade where he
spent the World War II years.

After the war he returned to Istria but then went back
to Belgrade where he worked for the state news agency Tanjug and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but soon went back to Rijeka were he became
the director of Rijeka's Croatian National theater Ivan Zajc. He remained
in this position until his sudden death in a car accident near Sežana on
July 3,
1957. (wasn't he defecting from Communist Yugoslavia and
the circumstance of his death deemed suspicious?).
