Playing: "Gesù Bambino" by John Tesh

Christmas Carols

Music early became a marked feature of the Christmas season.  But the first chants, litanies, and hymns were in Latin and too theological for popular use. Christmas carols written in the vernacular originated in Italy during the 13th century under the influence of St. Francis of Assisi who wrote a Christmas hymn in Latin — Psalmus in Nativitate — but there is no evidence that he specifically composed carols in Italian. His companions and spiritual sons, the first Franciscan friars, however, contributed a large number of Italian Christmas carols. Here is the English translation of one of these thirteenth-century Italian carols. The tune has become very familiar as the theme on which Handel developed his Pastoral Symphony in the Messiah:

In Bethlehem is born the Holy Child,
On hay and straw in the winter wild;
O, my heart is full of mirth
At Jesus' birth.

From Italy, the Christmas carols passed to France and Germany, and later to England, everywhere retaining its simplicity, fervor, and mirthfulness.  Music in itself has become one of the greatest tributes to Christmas, and includes some of the noblest compositions of the great musicians.

Popular Italian Christmas carols (canzoni di Natale) include: Gesù Bambino 'l è nato ("Baby Jesus Is Born"), Tu scendi dalle stelle ("You Came Down From the Stars") and Mille cherubini in coro ("A Thousand-Cherub Chorus"). Dormi, formi, o bel bambin is a popular Italian Christmas carol in which we find a mother asking her son to sleep. The child is weeping and the mother tries to convince him and make him sleep.

La canzone di zampagnone (Carol of the bagpipers) is a traditional Sicilian carol that narrates a small but significant portion of Christmas. It says the day when Jesus was born in Bethlehem it was a similar time of night but a star shone brightly as noon. Never ever did a star shone so brightly. The star played its part and went to call the three wise men from Orient.

The carols reflect the spirit and light of Christmas.

English text by Frederick H. Martens

Nell'umile capanna
nel freddo e povertá
é nato il Santo pargolo
che il mondo adorerá

Osannna, osanna cantano
con giubilante cuor
i tuoi pastore ed angeli
o re di luce e amor

venite adoremus,
venite adoremus
venite adoremus
Dominum

O bel bambin non piangere,
non piangere, Redentor!
la mamma tua cullandotti
ti bacia, O Salvator.

Osannna, osanna cantano
con giubilante cuor
i tuoi pastore ed angeli
o re di luce e amor

venite adoremus,
venite adoremus
venite adoremus
Dominum

When blossoms flowered 'mid the snows
Upon a winter night
Was born the Child, the Christmas Rose,
The King of Love and Light.

The angels sang, the shephers sang,
The grateful earth rejoiced,
And at his blessed birth the stars
Their exultation voiced.

O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Again the heart with rapture glows
To greet the holy night
That gave the world its Christmas Rose,
Its King of Love and Light.
Let ev'ry voice acclaim His name,
The grateful chorus swell,
From paradise to earth He came
That we with Him might dwell.

O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

The melody and original lyrics for the hymn were written by Alfonso Maria de' Liguori (1696-1787), a prominent Neapolitan priest (later canonized) who founded the small Redemptorist missionary order. In 1744, while staying at Convent of the Consolation, one of his order's houses in the small city of Deliceto in the province of Foggia in southeastern Italy, he put together the Christmas song in his native Neapolitan that begins "You come down from the stars" was entitled Quanno nascetti Ninno ("When the Child was Born). Most often known in English in a shortened version as the "Carol of the Bagpipers", it was later revised in Italian by Pope Pius IX (1846-1878). His version of the song became the most popular Italian Christmas carol of all time.

The lyrics are taken from a poem, "Tu scendi dalle Stelle," by Pope Pius IX (1846-1878). Translated as "From Starry Skies Descending". There are several translations of the lyrics into English styled after that of the King James Bible; one of these translations is given below.

O Bambino mio divino,
io ti vedo qui a tremar;
o Dio beato!
Ah, quanto ti costò l’avermi amato! (2 x.)

mancano panni e fuoco, o mio Signore. (2 x.)

Caro eletto pargoletto,
quanto questa povertà
più m’innamora,
giacché ti fece amor povero ancora. (2 x.)

Deh, mio bello e puro Agnello
a che pensi? dimmi tu. O amore immenso,

Dunque a morire per me, tu pensi, o Dio
amalo tu per me, s’io non so amare! (2 x)

Dolce amore del mio cuore, dove amor ti trasportò, o Gesù mio!
*Perché tanto patir? Per amor mio! (2 x)

Tu piangi per vederti da me ingrato,
*dove sì grande amor, sì poco amato! (2v)

Deh, mio bello e puro agnello, a che pensi dimmi tu? O amore immenso!
*"A morire per te rispondi io penso."

Dunque a morire per me, tu pensi o Dio
*e chi altro, fuor di te, amar poss'io? (2 x)

*Amalo tu per me, s'io nol so amare! (2 x)

From starry skies descending,
Thou comest, glorious King,
A manger low Thy bed,
In winter's icy sting;

O my dearest Child most holy,
Shudd'ring, trembling in the cold!
Great God, Thou lovest me!
What suff'ring Thou didst bear,
That I near Thee might be!

Thou art the world's Creator,
God's own and true Word,
Yet here no robe, no fire
For Thee, Divine Lord.

Dearest, fairest, sweetest Infant,
Dire this state of poverty.
The more I care for Thee,
Since Thou, o Love Divine,
Will'st now so poor to be.

Mille cherubini in coro
Renata Tebaldi (mp3), Carlo Buti (mp3), music videos

Adaptation of Wiegenlied 'Schlafe, schlafe, holder süsser Knabe', D.498, Op.98, No.2
by
Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828)

Many of Schubert's songs have a simple strophic character. These verses stand half-way between 'Art-song' and 'Folk-song'; the melody seems to be drawn from nature. Schubert marvellously achieved this kind of simplicity in this lullaby composed in November 1816 to anonymous verses. For Mille Cherubini in Coro, Schubert's Wiegenlied was adapted by the Italian Natività tradition by adding an Italian text about a thousand singing angels looking down from heaven.

Dormi, dormi,
sogna, piccolo amor mio.
Dormi, sogna,
posa il capo sul mio cor.

Mille cherubini in coro
ti sorridono dal ciel.
Una dolce canzone
t'accarezza il crin
Una man ti guida lieve
fra le nuvole d'or,
sognando e vegliando
su te, mio tesor,
proteggendo il tuo cammin.
Su te, mio tesor,
proteggendo il tuo cammin.

Dormi, dormi,
sogna, piccolo amor mio.
Dormi, sogna,
posa il capo sul mio cor.

Chiudi gli occhi,
ascolta gli angioletti,
dormi, dormi,
sogna, piccolo amor.

Dormi, dormi,
sogna, piccolo amor mio.
Dormi, sogna,
posa il capo sul mio cor.

Chiudi gli occhi,
ascolta gli angioletti,
dormi, dormi,
sogna, piccolo amor.

Venite, adoriamo
il nato Bambino,
il Figlio divino
per noi s'incarnò.
Sorgete, pastori,
che al pari del giorno
coi raggi d'intorno
la notte spuntò.

Venite, adoriamo
il nato Bambino,
il Figlio divino
per noi s'incarnò.
O candida notte,
che i giorni fai lieti,
già pria dai profeti
di Te si parlò.

O notte in cui nacque
il Verbo del Padre
che Vergine Madre
in seno portò.
Venite, adoriamo
il nato Bambino,
il Figlio divino
per noi s'incarnò.

Mio Bene infinito,
il grande (tuo) amore
per me peccatore
così t'abbassò.
Prostrato ai Tuoi piedi
Ti adoro, o Signore,
E questo mio core
in dono Ti dò.

Venite, adoriamo
il nato Bambino,
il Figlio divino
per noi s'incarnò.

Silent Night, Holy Night

The original lyrics for the song in German, Stille Nacht, was written by Joseph Mohr and  the melody was composed by Franz X. Gruber. The carol was first performed 190 years ago on 24 December 1818 at the St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf, Austria. Since then the Christmas song has achieved world wide appeal and it is said that there are over 300 translations of the song in the world. More about its history.

Stille Nacht
(Deutsch)

1. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigen Haar,
: Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! :

2. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
: Jesus in deiner Geburt! :

3. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Die der Welt Heil gebracht,
Aus des Himmels goldenen Höhn,
Uns der Gnaden Fülle läßt sehn,
: Jesum in Menschengestalt! :

4. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Wo sich heut alle Macht
Väterlicher Liebe ergoß,
Und als Bruder huldvoll umschloß
: Jesus die Völker der Welt! :

5. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Lange schon uns bedacht,
Als der Herr vom Grimme befreit
In der Väter urgrauer Zeit
: Aller Welt Schonung verhieß! :

6. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Alleluja,
Tönt es laut bei Ferne und Nah:
|: "Jesus der Retter ist da!" :|

Silent Night
(English)

Silent night Holy night
All is calm all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born;
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth;
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Tiha noć, sveta noć!
Pastiri, amo svi
Pjevat Isusu anđela poj
S majkom poklon prikazat mu  svoj,
Srce dat mu na dar,
Srce dat mu na dar.

Variation:

Tiha noć, sveta noć, spava sve sanak blag,
samo Josip i Marija bdiju dokle sinak drag
sniva rajski san, sniva rajski san.

Tiha noć, blažena noć, javlja sad neba zbor,
svim pastirim sretan čas, svud se ori neba glas:
dodje Isus spas, dodje Isus spas.
