Displaced Person Transports: Cargo of Hope This page on the U.S. Merchant Marines website describes the essence of what was endured by many of our immigrants, but the account and images bear a particularly uncanny parallel to the vivid memories of Marisa Ciceran who, on 11 October 1951, then a 7-1/2-year-old refugee from Istria and Rijeka, Yugoslavia, embarked from Bremerhaven, Germany and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA with her parents and younger sister on the General S.D.
