SUSRETI: MARISA CICERAN, GLAVNA UREDNICA WEB-STRANICA ISTRIANET.ORG "Htjeli bismo puno vise prostora posvetiti tradiciji i običajima Istre i pojedinih mjesta. U Istru je iz New Yorka, gdje živi i radi, dožla zajedno s velikom grupom iseljenika u sklopu programa »United Istrians of the World 2000«, no ostala je nekoliko tjedana duže, da bi upoznala suradnike, licem dosad nepoznate Internet-prijatelje, prikupila nove materijale i uspostavila kontakte s ovdašnjim, prije svega kulturnim institucijama. - Htjeli bismo puno više prostora posvetiti tradiciji i običajima Istre i pojedinih mjesta. Emigrants from All Over The World Write an Istrian Encyclopedia on the Internet ENCOUNTERS: MARISA CICERAN, CHIEF EDITOR OF WEB PAGES ISTRIANET.ORG "We would like to dedicate more space to heritage and customs of Istria and specific towns. Istrian music pages are getting bigger and richer, and we are looking for coworkers who could help with history and linguistic pages", Marisa Ciceran tells us of most recent plans. PAZIN - Istrian Internet surfers have known http://www.istrianet.org for several years a starting point for most of the virtual research of the Peninsula, an address that one would give to friends who want to learn more about Istria. Visiting these days is Ms. Marisa Ciceran, chief editor of this site and the informal leader of an international group of volunteers who have united their forces to present on the Internet everything that is interesting and worth knowing about Istria. She came to Istria from New York, where she lives, with a large group of emigrants as part of a program called "United Istrians of the World 2000", but she decided to stay several weeks longer to meet and get to know her coworkers, the up to now personally unknown Internet friends, to collect new material, and to establish contacts, primarily with our cultural institutions. The Istrianet.org web site was developed several years ago from the personal pages of Martin Bassani, a well known site at that time called istria.com. Interest in meeting on the Internet by Istrians around the world turned into a desire to create a unique Istrian Internet-Encyclopedia, in which the presentation and appreciation of common heritage would take priority over political, national, linguistic and other obstacles that divided Istrians many times during this [20th] century. Outside political associations It took a few months of team work to convert personal web pages of a lover of Istria into what turned out to be a beautifully designed site that offers a variety of information, with emphasis on cultural and historic herritage, but also works of some authors. Besides Marisa Ciceran, who carries the biggest part of the work load that includes design, planning and web page creation, the chief creators of the site are Guido Villa from Melbourne, Australia, Paolo Benoli from Monfalcone, Franco Aitala from Philadelphia, Gianclaudio De Angelini from Rome, Michael Plass from Berlin, and Franko Pavicevac from New York. They make up the "inner circle" of editors who analyse and finalize site contents, which are discussed, often for months, on a dedicated mailing list called "istria-workers", which in turn has about 30 subscribers, comprising the full editors team. Among them Marisa names Nevio Terdoslavic, Vito Teric and Doro Honovic from New York, [Denis Sankovic from Cleveland], Piero Grimalda from Sedona, AZ, Lucio Krbavac and Mario Demetlica from Australia, Catherine Edwards, Albert Ciceran and Ivan Kalcic from Toronto, Livio Metton from Trieste, and many others. In concert with gathering of a creative group of volunteers for istrianet.org, financial
support was also sought. It was found mainly among Istrians in diaspora, along with
donations fromn five clubs. At one point there were plans to institute a
not-for-profit
corporation formed with a group of volunteers, but the idea was rejected
[postponed] for the fear of
associating with political structures or groups, which among Istrian
emigrants is a
rather sensitive matter. The site is located on a server in the US, it has 350 MB of disk space, with 200 MB already used up. Feedback, provided by ever growing Guestbook (special page on the site used for visitors to express their thoughts of the site), several mailing lists with some 600 [300] subscribers, and large number of personal messages from all over he world, that Marisa receives, encourages creators of this Istrian Internet corner to continue the work on realizing their ideas. We would like to dedicate much more space to customs and herritage of Istria specific locations in it. Pages on Istrian music are getting richer lately, and we are looking for co-workers capable of helping with history and linguistics, presents briefly the plans Marisa. She adds that there are more and more women on mailing lists, especially since the amount of political or politicizing messages had decreased, sometimes as a result of intervention "from within", and since greater attention has been place on finding relatives and reuniting families. After the official part of the "United Istrians" [Istria-2000] event ended, web masters and a smaller number of co-workers of istrianet.org gathered in Piran. This was the first direct contact of people who met on Internet and became co-workers and friends, and day in and day out, Marisa adds, out of some old and forgotten email address pops out a new face. When she returns to New York the team that creates istrianet.org will no doubt be enlarged by a few more coworkers, and there will always be good reasons to visit and surf through new contents of the largest Istrian site outside Istria.
