Labin: Art in the Mining Town

Autor Dorotea Jendrić

LABIN –With over twenty cultural manifestations in August connected with the Labin's Day, an old mining town is becoming known today as a cultural center. Besides the famous 33rd Mediterranean sculptors' symposium where they will be building ten sections of the "White Road" in Dubrova to the design by Julio Knifer – in the city atelier started a multi-artist exhibition under the title "Advances in Labin's art" where the art selector Branka Arh from Rijeka collected about 23 artists around the theme of "space drawings and sculptures".

Buyout prize went to Percan

Under the sponsorship of the city of Labin the judging panel selected for the "buyout prize" award for the work of the veteran Renato Percan's drawing-story "Preoccupation in 36 episodes" and the sponsor's award was given to the young painter Tea Bicic.

The idea was to actualize a problem of space and select the best by the artists dealing with this theme. Drawing suggests space, sculpture realizes the experience of space – said Arh. All the authors are by birth or work connected with Labin, the city that has around forty academically educated artists, which is an exceptionally large number for a small city. This is really uncommon, the number of artists to the number of inhabitance, even in the entire Croatia there are larger cities with fewer artists – added the art selector and said that this is mostly due to the education and openness of the sculptor Josip Diminic who as a professor raised several young creative generations of artists.

Combination of techniques

With a clear drawing of the award-winning Renato Percan, they exhibited also works in the combination techniques by Liljana Vlacic, Eugen Kokot, Beti Kranjcevic, Zdravko Milic, Mirto Diminic, Tea Vicic, Vera Kos Paliska, Davorka Vodanjet, a video by Ivona Verbanac who has very professionally designed the exhibition catalogue in the shape of the rolled up book.

We can also see the pastel works of Quintino Bassani and Jasna Maretic, sculpture of Aida Blaskovic, Emil Bobanovic, pencil drowing by Karlo Paliska, Ester Kranjac, charcoal by Mate Cvrljak and others. A special corner of the exhibition was reserved for the six art students.
