Membership Rules

1. Every man who wishes to become a
member of Istrian Seamen's Benevolent Society shall be known to and
recommended by at least one member and be worthy of acceptance.
2. A member shall not be less than
eighteen (18) years of age and not older than forty five (45) years of
age to become a member.
3. A prospective member when he pays one
and a half ($1.50) dollars [portion deleted] shall be visited by the
society's doctor; if the doctor finds the prospective member to be in
good health he will become a member. If the doctor finds that he is not
in good health the doctor's fees will be reinbursed and the prospective
member will be denied membership.
4. For members eighteen (18) to thirty
five (35) years of age the entrance fee is five ($5) dollars. From
thirty five (35) years of age to forty five (45) the starting fee is ten
($10) dollars. The monthly fee for every member is one and a half
($1.50).
5. Members shall pay one dollar ($1)
whenever another member dies. The member that attends the funeral shall
not pay the one dollar.
6. To qualify for medical assistence,
every member must be a member of the society for six (6) months.
7. The society shall not pay
medical benefits to any member where his illness is a result of
alcoholism or beatings or is accustomed to live stoned (suffers from
drug addiction?), or has venereal desease.
8. A ailing member shall report to the
president at the time he becomes ill. An ailing member will not receive
any benefits for the first week of his illness; when a member is sick
for two weeks he will be paid from the first day he reported and will
receive ten ($10) dollars weekly during his illness for ten (10) weeks.
If the member is ill longer than ten (10)
weeks, then the member will receive five ($5) dollars per week for
another ten weeks.
If the member remains sick longer then
the votes of the members of the society will decide what help will be
offered to the member.
9. No medical assistence for the illness
shall be paid out until society's doctor issues a certificate for the
ailment. The society's doctor will look after the sick member.
10. The society will pay the member for
the same illness only once.
11. If the member dies within first 6
months of his membership the society will pay two hundred ($200) dollars
for the funeral of that member.
12. When a member dies that has more than
six (6) months of membership. The society will pay ($300) three hundred
dollars; two hundred dollars will be used for the funeral and the
remaining hundred dollars ($100) will be given to fulfill the wishes of
the member.
13. If the member does not have anyone to
bury him then the society will bury the member at the society's burial
ground.
14. When the member is a soldier and dies
by accident while he is in uniform, the society will only pay one
hundred ($100) dollars to the member's survivors. While the member is in
the military armed forces he does not pay monthly membership fees.
15. Members must attend the main annual
meeting which is held in December.
16. To vote for a president of the
society at the main meeting, six (6) members must be in attendance.
17. The society has the right to disband
when there are only six (6) remaining members.
18. Members that do not pay monthly fees
for three (3) months lose all sick benefits and the hundred ($100)
dollar death benefit.
19. Every member must pay for an annual
dance and one picnic if these are held. (I am not sure I got this right)
20. To be eligible as candidates for the
positions of president or secretary of the society, a member must
be a member of the society for at least one year.
21. The officers of the society shall
have two meetings per anum.

and go into effect
