These
pages are dedicated to the last Chief of Police of Fiume under
the Italian regime who, since the enactment of the racial laws
in Italy, strove at his own total personal risk to save the
lives of Jews and others who were politically persecuted in
Abbazia and Fiume by the Fascists and Nazis. For example, one
way he did it was by throwing all the local Jews in jail
to protect them to prevent them from being "deported" to
concentration camps. Eventually, Triestin-born SS Major Gen.
Odillo
Globocnik found out about this ploy and the Gestapo deported the police
chief to the Nazi extermination camp of Dachau. He died there on
February 10, 1945 at the tender age of 36. Efforts are currently underway to gain sainthood for Giovanni Palatucci. |
