This section of our virtual home is devoted to the profiles of the Istrian people - famous, infamous and ordinary - the proud and the profane, the haughty and the humble, those who today reside in the divided Istria of Croatia, Slovenia and Italy and those who were born under earlier regimes and emigrated to other countries around the world. We shall even introduce you to some notable non-Istrians who have made an impact on Istria or its peoples throughout its known and documented history. Our goal is to tell the story - sometimes through personal vignettes drawn from memories and other times through biographies - of the public and private lives of real people. We shall strive to tell you of their common and uncommon trials and tribulations, but most of all of their survival and positive achievements. We shall attempt to capture the common bond that exists among the Istrian people who originated from a single place and who, by all official accounts, were scattered to the winds and presumed to be absorbed by other nations and thereby lost to Istria. In fact, the Istrian people are very much alive in their singular spirit because most Istrians continue to feel a close kinship to one another and to the magical land and surrounding waters that spawned them. Please participate with us in this reunion of the body and spirit. In the language of your choice, describe your personal experiences as Istrians and as descendants of Istrians. Tell us about your practical knowledge of old traditions and unique or specialized skills. Share with us also your personal family memories, photograph albums, biographies, and even reports about your current activities in and around modern Istrian society. Marisa Ciceran |
