Aqvileja / Aquileja, now Aquileia,
was a large and flourishing town of Histria at the head of the Adriatic
on the River Natiso and fifteen miles from the coast. It was founded
by the Romans in 183 B.C. to block the inroads of the barbarians
from the north, a colonia being settled there by a senatorial
committee of three (triumviri coloniae deducundae) consisting
of the consuls P. Scipio Nasica and C. Flaminius and the ex-praetor
L. Manlius Acidinus.
